Hounding Horrors of Doom


If you're over the stress of playing with Doom and want to add the agonizing feeling of being chased by otherworldly creatures, congratulations, this deck is for you!

Introduction

Most of my previous Amina decks struggled with her flat, uninspired stat line and a limited number of actions, mainly because too many had to go to clearing Doom from Sin-Eater. This deck solves both problems: Amina's new pets investigates with at least 6 and fight with at least 5 while giving Amina 1 or 2 extra actions each round.

Also, I was tired of "chase encountering" the Hounds of Tindalos, and I wanted a deck where I could play them directly, including their weaknesses in the deck and play with the risk of being assaulted by Hounds at any moment.

Why Amina?

Good question. Actually almost any Mystic in the game can play this deck, but I choose Amina for three reasons:

  • 1) This deck plays with Doom and needs Sin-Eater, like all Amina decks => Check!
  • 2) This deck relies on fairly expensive assets, so it needs resource generation => Check!
  • 3) Thematically, I needed a investigator who could hear grunts of creatures from another dimension => Check!

F.A.Q.
  • Are we talking about a very powerful deck?
    Clearly not.

  • But can I play with it or am I going to die at the first try?
    It's pretty good and playable, for Amina I'd say it's better than other builds and provides a lot of fun.

  • You tricked me! I played and halfway through the game I was bitten by Hounds of Tindalos.

Main Strategy:

The strategy is quite simple, just play Alyssa Graham first, them play the Hounds of Tindalos as soon as possible and try as hard as you can not to let them turn against you.

Once Hounds are in play, use Alyssa every turn to avoid the Hounds' weakness and use Sin-Eater to clear Alyssa.

Warning!

One of the weaknesses of this deck is its low card draw.
You might be tempted to include in cards like Guts, Overpower or Perception, but that would be a mistake because every card you draw makes Alyssa's foresight disappear, leaving you at the mercy of the Hounds.

This deck needs selective draw, so it only has Parallel Fates (2).
Even when you have the two Unbound Beasts at the bottom of the deck, you don't want to draw too many cards because the Beasts will be waiting for you, unless you have been able to discard them thanks to the Scroll of Secrets or Foresight.


Card by card:
  • Alyssa Graham: use her ability every turn, and when you throw a weakness to the bottom, ready her with Sin-Eater to look again the top card of the deck. You can even throw two Hounds to the bottom of the deck in one turn! Once you have purged your deck of weaknesses, use it to look at your friends' decks or the Encounter deck.

  • Summoned Hound: cornerstone of the deck and why you are reading this. Play them with Amina's ability, so when you remove the Doom with Sin-Eater you ready them, gaining an extra action.

  • Scroll of Secrets: I use it to discard the Unbound Beast and other Weakness when Alyssa put them on the bottom of the deck. If every weakness is discarded, it just provides extra draw.

  • Foresight: it's just wonderful when you can see the future.

  • Parallel Fates (2): needed tutor for getting key cards and the 5-card forecast gives Alyssa a well-deserved rest.

  • Ghastly Possession: use it with a Hound, so later you can clean the Doom of it with Sin-Eater, gainning an extra action.

  • Buffs for stats: St. Hubert's Key, Wolf Mask and Skill cards. Just to pass the skill tests that poor Amina can't. Another good options may be Blood Pact and Arcane Studies. Later, Crystalline Elder Sign may be a good option.

  • Spells that every mystic should carry: Read the Signs, Spectral Razor and Ward of Protection (try to save the latter for Treacheries that may affect Alyssa).

  • Painkillers: I included it due to Amina's low health, but to be honest, I have never used it since the Hounds provide a lot of damage soak, so feel free to change it for another thing.

  • Word of Woe and Word of Weal: it's a pity they have almost no use in the deck unless you play with another assets (see next section).

The deck plays a flexible role by its very nature, but has some non-vital cards that can be changed and above all, a free hand slot, which allow a slight customization option:

Campaing Guide:

Don't do that.
This deck needs Sin-Eater and at least one Charisma and one Summoned Hound to have sense. That means at least 10xp and Amina, contrary to other much more powerful investigators, she has not initial experience.

May be you can spent the 3xp from In the Thick of It for an initial Charisma, after the first scenario buy the Hounds and play first scenarios with Moonlight Ritual until you get Sin-Eater.

Hey! Thanks for your comment, I really appreciate it. Yes, I had always used Ghastly Possession with assets with uses (like I did in Jim's deck) and I was surprised how well it fits in this deck as well.

Why Wolf Mask? Why not a Cat Mask?

Cat Mask is a good choice, yes, it gives us which is what I'm looking for to boost the attack of the Summoned Hounds. Amina is also one of the few investigators who can make it quite profitable.

Despite everything the Wolf Mask still seems better to me, it charges just when you need it in a much more consistent way. And for this Amina deck, the small boost seems to me more useful for Treacheries cards than the boost.

I played Amina in Scarlet Keys to a successful ending in a 3 gator group as the cluever on Normal:

Very similar to the deck example here. Of note, I very much enjoyed Time Warp for all of its usual shenanigans but also because it is a great way to undo a draw of a weakness allowing draws during a turn. If you have Foresight handy you can then immediately repeat whatever you did but with Foresight to counter the weakness. You still need to clear the top card with Alyssa Graham at the end of the turn.

Elle Rubash was also great to get a stat bump and hide a doom on an asset.

I managed to avoid Deafening Silence for the entire campaign. The Unbound Beast managed to bite me once.

Time Warp is a great addition to the deck. I haven't played much with this card, but all the games with it have offered me fun moments.

In what may be an Arkham first, I used Time Warp to cancel an action where I did a skill test where I drew an Elder Sign from the chaos bag because I drew a weakness from Perception resolving. I then repeated the skill test but used Foresight to cancel the weakness when it was drawn.

This is a great Amina build! Never thought of Ghastly revelation on Hound to refresh via sin-eater. And Alyssa is great. If it were to work in campaign, it would likely need to be paired with a strong investigator just to rack up those xp quickly. After that it doesn't need a lot to stay strong. My blind TSK Amina run paired with Cyclopean hammer Norman. That worked out really well and we won!
