So here it is, after a fair amount of testing:

Dexter "Toolbox" Drake, the Spellslinger

At first, I was lukewarm on Dexter, his ability and deckbuilding. Boy, was I wrong!

I just speeded through a couple of campaigns with our favorite stage magician as the main fighter and supplement cluer. With the upcoming spells and rogue access, Dexter really shines in an asset heavy build. For a mystic he has insane draw ability and resource generation.

What is the deck trying to do?

  1. Get the mystic setup (combat spell, clue spell, willpower boost)
  2. Make bucks
  3. Use your strong spell assets when needed, cycle your cards in and out of the play area

What are key cards of the deck?

Draw:

Arcane Initiate (play, use x times, discard to ability + she costs only 1 and can cycle herself), Scroll of Prophecies (play, use x times, discard to ability), Molly Maxwell (play, use x times, discard to ability) -> You get the idea.

Don’t be afraid to use the above-mentioned assets only once or twice. Dexter is really flexible after an initial setup and his draw is insane for a mystic.

Resources:

Lone Wolf (play early, discard late or on emergency), David Renfield (play, use x times, discard to ability), Uncage the Soul (great on the starting hand with a spell asset), "Watch this!" (great on low willpower test treacheries)

Clues:

Clairvoyance is your best friend; Sixth Sense if the former is not yet available

Fighting:

Aim at always having a Shrivelling or Azure Flame down or in hand, switch gears if you run low on either health or sanity; use Spectral Razor for 3-health enemies

The combat suit of 6 cards makes Dexter a decent fighter, even at level 0. Of note: Putting down a combat spell with the ability does not provoke attacks of opportunity.

Odd choices:

Switchblade (Just there to play another asset fast, combined with his ability)

Mists of R'lyeh (When you need to evade instead of killing)

Sign Magick(For adding a third spell to your combat and clue setup)

Liquid Courage (To heal the horror you took from Shrivelling, Clairvoyance and Ward of Protection)

The rest of the events are just my standard mystic suit.

Here is a small Molly Maxwell guide:

Tome = Scroll of Prophecies

Ritual = Sign Magick

Weapon = Switchblade

Charm = Crystal Pendulum

Sorcerer = Arcane Initiate

Patron = David Renfield

Illicit = Liquid Courage or Switchblade

Talent = Lone Wolf or Sign Magick

So, give him a go, he deserves some love! There are some really cool and flexible things that you can pull off. It does not matter, what the scenario throws at you.

All cards are already available on the Super Complete Mod for Table Top Simulator.

Really nice writeup! I was looking for a gimmicky mystic to play! Going to give this Dexter a spin in my next campaign.

I love "Watch This!" on the test on Liquid courage. You're basically making a bet that you won't throw up your beverage. Nice write up!

If resources are a problem, you can also include Gregory Gry and then wager his money on your ability to drink some Liquid Courage.

With 5 base I feel like Lucky Cigarette Case also works great for Dexter. After he fills his hand with cards he can trade it out for the Holy Rosary.

Is Crystal Pendulum worth including? I haven't tried it yet. It seems to me like a fun card but a fair amount worse than Rosary.

I think you can draw regularly with Crystal Pendulum. Especially if combined with Premonition or tests against your low agility - just name the test difficulty and expect your 2 agility turn into a 0 after the token. I like it so far better, than the 1 horror soak.

What do you think about adding Scavenging via Versatile to recover Switchblade, making all assets a free action?

Interesting idea. Once you have 3 to 4 assets down via "normal actions" they serve as your slots to use your ability every turn and makes each following asset a free action. Thats the power and beauty of Dexter Drake. Hard to explain but easy to see once you sit down on the table with him.

One other thing I am trying, is to make every asset in the deck unique (only 1 copy). Especially once Jacqueline Fine is available, using 1x Azure Flame and 1x Shrivelling is effectively the same as 2x Shrivelling.

Relic Hunter seems inevitable, especially with access to Rogue accessories.
