tl;dr;

Thematic combat optimized deck keeping a big gun loaded and ready on the table while tanking for multiplayer campaigns.

This unorthodox Zoey build relies more on committing skill cards and her Cross to and tests and raking in the rewards with Drawing Thin meaning its valid 2019-04-20 Taboo List, but unfortunately Drawing Thin is nerfed in 2019-09-27.

Hallowed Mirror, Solemn Vow, interesting weapons, and mixing in newer cards keep this familiar guardian fresh and fun to play!

[WIP]

This deck is still a Work In Progress and untested! :)

Zoey's Journal

April 13th

Thirty arduous gruesome years to the date have passed since "that terrible fire" took everything, except the voice of God, away from me. Lost in dark thoughts this morning walking to "The Diner" for my morning shift, I literally bump into an odd bookish man sending his stack of dusty tomes and bizarre artifacts flying. As we paused to collect his belongings, he looked concernedly at the recent cuts on my arms and especially my face. After dusting himself off, the eccentric gentlemen introduces himself as Mr. "Rook" and hands me what he calls the Hallowed Mirror—on the condition I meet him again this evening so he can show me how the intricate device operates.

Area cop, Officer Mori, came in for coffee and small talk again. He seems to take umbrage at my inattention and presses me on it—I tell him about Mr. "Rook". Hiding his jealousy, he redoubles his efforts to woo me through gifts and he even begins stalking me outside of work—he justifies it as "protection". Poor fool will get himself killed if he keeps up his "nice guy" shtick.

April 14th

Last night I was smitten by the unusual Mr. "Rook"—charmed and amazed by his experience and understanding of spiritual mysticism and apocryphal texts. I can't believe I'm falling for him, but I feel like he could teach me so much, and might understand the voices in my head. I feel so different since meeting him. Tomorrow I shall tell him that I love him!

Zoey rips off her cross defiantly, picks up her new Hallowed Mirror and gazes deeply into the reflection of her own dark eyes. In a flash of insight it occurs to her that the voice of God inside her head has always simply been her own true inner desire to watch this world burn beautifully bright! She rings up her soon to be lover on the telly and asks, voice cracking with excitement, 'Hey Mr. "Rook", have you ever heard of that terrible new invention? I think they call it a Flamethrower!?! Also, do you have a first name?!?'...

Upgrades

Mulligan

Keep in order of preference:

Mulligan anything else!

Opening hand Mr. "Rook" has the downside of possibly pulling in one or both weaknesses before you have a weapon out, so its a little risky. The free card draw is great though and you could even scrounge him up later after you've dealt with your weaknesses.

Even if you don't pull any of those cards, decent chance you'll get Tetsuo who you can kill off ASAP to safely tutor a weapon. Ideally you have a weapon out by round 3, and can get by with your bare fists and skill cards until then.

Operation

  1. Get one weapon out ASAP for consistent 6 and 2 damage attacks each turn. Burn through the ammo and replace it with one fished out of the discard pile or tutored from your deck by Tetsuo or Mr. "Rook".
  2. Don't wear Zoey's Cross! Commit it to skill tests and let Tetsuo dig it out of the trash for you. Though it might make sense if you know ahead of time there will be pesky 1hp enemies and you keep enough resources on-hand to play weapons; or didn't get a weapon or Drawing Thin in your opening hand and want some quick protection.
  3. Drawing Thin powers economy and card draw:
    • making actions committing Skill/Zoey's Cross adding +3
    • resolving Mythos Phase Encounter Cards committing at least a +2 cards
    • in a pinch you can purposely fail a or
  4. Let Tetsuo soak Damage/Horror and fetch back your Cross, a spent weapon, or any Item out of the discard pile or tutor likely for a second (or in a pinch—first) weapon.
  5. Scrounge for Supplies to bring Tetsuo or Mr. "Rook" back from the grave to fight again!
  6. Tank for your wimpy cluever friends and survive with:

Pros

  • Fun way to use typically non-Lovecraftian cards with a non-Lovecraftian "Love Triangle" themed deck ;)
  • Consistent 6 2 damage attacks
  • Consistent economy / card draw engine
  • Tank w/ soak / healing / survival options
  • Incrementally priced upgrade path—afford something new after each scenario!
  • Burninate the Countryside!

Cons

  • Starts a little slow on tempo burning actions to lay out / scrounge for assets until Ever Vigilant
  • Still possible to get a bad opening hand w/o Prepared for the Worst or Stick to the Plan
  • Essentially NO Cluevering ability—Plan multiplayer strategy accordingly!
