My attempt to win Return to the Night of the Zealot with three Ultimatums active (Finality, Chaos, and Highlander) continues. Let's see how the resilient Wendy Adams fares against the Cult of Umôrdhoth under these circumstances!

SESSION REPORT

SCENARIO II - RETURN TO THE MIDNIGHT MASKS

A decent investigative start but I'm missing key tools for handling enemies. I'll head to Southside first and hope I can pull an ally from my deck to assist.

R1 (0D, 1H, 5$, 0C): 0/6 doom

I thought about investigating, but better I think to get my Lantern in play and leverage its help rather than waste time potentially failing to find clues.

R2 (0D, 1H, 2$, 0C): 1/6 doom

Turns out I can fail to find clues just fine even with the Lantern in play! I thought about discarding to re-test but decided I'd rather hang onto that for an emergency.

R3 (1D, 1H, 1$, 1C): 2/6 doom

Taking a lot of Hunting Shadow damage early isn't so bad when you're at St. Mary's Hospital to cure it. Herman Collins is a welcome sight as he's one of the unique cultists I can conceivably parley... and I'll likely want those shroud 1 Graveyard clues and victory point later on.

R4 (0D, 1H, 1$, 0C): 3/6 doom

With a hunting enemy in play I now need to play ring-around-the-rosie unless and until I draw a tool for handling it.

R5 (0D, 1H, 2$, 2C): 4/6 doom

Waylay is a clutch draw there for dealing with Billy Cooper. Turns out, it'll actually let me deal with him and the next encounter threat all in one fell swoop.

R6 (2D, 1H, 6$, 0C): 5/6 doom

I paused to draw cards on the off chance I'd get something to deal with the Agenda 1b hunter... and to let the Stubborn Detective catch up, so that they'd both be in the same location when I get away from that. My tool for getting away, of course, is Elusive.

R7 (3D, 3H, 5$, 0C): 6/6 doom

Well. Ruth Turner is someone I can actually "defeat," so that's good. But the extra doom isn't good. Starting to think I'll need to cut my losses soon. If I can at least get Ruth, Herman Collins, and the Graveyard victory point, I'll be satisfied.

R8 (5D, 3H, 5$, 0C): 1/8 doom [+1 on Disciple of the Devourer]

The Corpse-Taker is going to accelerate things incredibly. I don't have a means of dealing with it. I could Bait and Switch it away from Rivertown for a turn, but it'll just bounce right back there despite being evaded. Thinking for a while, I decide to beeline for the Graveyard and get everything I can get there, then resign. Not ideal, but I was prepared to take that approach anyway.

R9 (5D, 4H, 7$, 1C): 2/8 doom [+1 on Disciple of the Devourer, +1 on Corpse-Taker]

Really cutting it close here as I'm 1 damage or horror away from defeat!

R10 (6D, 6H, 9$, 2C): 5/8 doom [+1 on Disciple of the Devourer]

No resolution = Resolution 1

In retrospect I got greedy there at the end for the Graveyard victory point. A bad draw would have ended things right there. Still though, Wendy Adams just barely managed to pull through with a decent result going into the final scenario. I need some kind of plan for Narôgath there... but that's a tale for another session!

This was a pretty fun read! I don't want to know how long it took to compose but it was more entertaining that I thought it might be at first glance. I'm looking forward to Devourer Below!

I did have a question on the turn where you discarded Leo De Luca. You took 4 actions that turn which if I read it right, the 4th action came from De Luca. Wouldn't most people say that De Luca's action is always your last? I mean, I'd have played it the way you, naturally, but I was curious if there was an official ruling on that or if it is just a judgement call for each player?

Thank you, glad you enjoyed! On Leo De Luca, the official FAQ description on his card page states as follows:

  • On the 'additional action': When spending actions during your turn, the first action you spend each turn takes up the 'additional' designation. If Leo De Luca is discarded mid-turn, you do not lose 1 action from your total pool of actions for the turn. If you then play a second copy of the card, you gain a further additional action.

So, Leo's additional action is your first action during a turn after he's in play.

I need to redo my Devourer Below playthrough (I made an egregious rules error with Wendy's Amulet necessitating a replay) but once I've completed that I'll get it up and posted!

Oh, interesting. Well that's definitely how I'm going to play De Luca from now on! Thanks!

And not to worry; I'll check back and read it whenever you get around to posting it :)

Hello Voltgloss! Just coming through here - and stopped for reading your very entertaining and reminiscent story! Glorious Wendy, how easily she coped with Big Billy and the Nightgaunt there! I will read the other story later - it takes a bit of time to replay your game in one's head - but thank you for all your effort - great write-up!!!!!!
