Revenge of the Nerd

G0F_lgsW8AA9G8M.png

EDIT: FFG seemingly have retconned this as current environment, so take these as decks built with a small legacy collection. I'm leaving the rest of the write-up here unedited for posterity... In this mini-series I'm looking at balanced, somewhat flexy decks which are "always current". These use only the revised core (RC) and standalone starter packs. Here, Roland uses the nerd supuerpower* Mind over Matter •• to boost his Shotgun. This combo gives you higher average damage than legacy big guns like Lightning Gun and Flamethrower...

* I don't endorse the creepy Revenge of the Nerds movie. When I had the idea for this image I just found it too funny to pass up. Thank you for reading this PSA...

Overview

Campaign starter and planned progression

0 XP deck is below (and link here). If you wanted to play this true solo, then Stand Together becomes Clean Them Out for similar economy and a icon. Outside of true solo it's a little too situational for getting resources early scenario, which is when you need cash the most. For side deck you could consider Working a Hunch, however this deck is expensive and your one Perception and Deduction provide card draw or clues for an action you want to take already. Emergency Cache could provide a bigger cash boost than the resource cards here, however it doesn't have any icons to commit and you can't play it actionlessly like Burning the Midnight Oil and often Cryptic Writings.

As a foreword here, if you start getting stacked with mental trauma you can consider moving First Aid ••• up the upgrade track and/or purchasing an Elder Sign Amulet (Overpower •• is definitely more of a luxury upgrade so could be dropped in its place). However, Roland does have a of 3 and there is horror soak present here, so I would only recommend Elder Sign Amulet if you're particularly unlucky with trauma during a campaign. As such a recommended order of purchases/upgrades is:

Final thoughts

This deck wouldn't have been built without the restrictions that current environment puts in place. Having said that, it's an awesomely powerful and thematic deck - a Fed with a Shotgun is like PB&J! The pairing with Mind over Matter •• produces absurd boosts, helping you get big damage even on Outer Gods.

This is also apparently the first time this combo has been included in a deck on this site, despite the fact I'd wager the FF devs likely were thinking of Roland and the Shotgun when they added Mind over Matter •• to Harvey's starter deck. Who would have thought sets that are over 5 years old would still hold some surprises?

When considering legacy environment cards and assuming the same ally support, Lightning Gun costs more resources and typically does less damage on average than Shotgun with Mind over Matter ••. Even with Flamethrower, taboo XP is the same when factoring in Mind over Matter, but it has the engagement requirement and max damage is still worse. You're obviously relying on a combo for that top tier damage here which you aren't with the legacy guns (and you will need Extra Ammunition), but the key question is whether you can assemble the combo before you fight an end of scenario boss - and the answer with the strong card draw is yes, almost definitely. Overall there's many circumstances where this combo does higher average damage than legacy environment darlings. No, really!

For a worked example if you take Umôrdhoth on standard difficulty, then assuming are -3, you're 82% likely to deal the full 5 damage per action at a 13 test with the Shotgun (and 94% likely to deal 3 or more damage). This gives an average damage of 4.53 per fight action, compared to the average damage of 3.76 with the Flamethrower (only fails you in both cases, but the lower max damage for the Flamethrower caps its average as you'd expect). Even with the limited XP in NotZ, if you take just one each of Shotgun and Mind over Matter ••, and Grete Wagner ••• in place of your second Mind over Matter, then you can feasibly pull off this combo by the last scenario of the campaign.

All in all, this deck is a blast to play... literally!

This looks like a very fun deck, thank you!

@Westmeres No problem! I really enjoyed with this one how it leans into the side, but then also leverages that with Mind over Matter for better combat. It was also fun working on good card draw, given there's not convenient consistency tools like Stick to the Plan to fall back on.

I'm still surprised just how much you can get out of the revised core and the standalone investigator packs!

Very clever! I believe more gems like this exist and the Current environment (and clever folks like you) will bring them to light. Another combo I think was overlooked for a bit is Book of War with Chuck Fergus.

@HungryColquhoun Love that he has so much burst with Mind over Matter and Shotgun and also allies (which are also very useful) to compensate for his lower sanity. Absolutely brilliant!

@PJFrigate Thank you! Yeah I'm not sure why Mind over Matter •• has been overlooked for Roland for so long, Tsuruki23 did mention Roland as an appropriate user of the card in his review back in the day but currently there's only one other deck on the site that uses it and it's not a Shotgun deck. I guess there's always been Stick to the Plan plus Ever Vigilant to gobble up XP in legacy environment, so maybe it's been to hard to squeeze it in with the competition. I guess before the FAQ came out negating it, everyone wanted Stick to the Plan on Roland in particular because it used to trigger Astounding Revelation and make him rich - so again that centralized a lot of decks. Agree that Chuck Fergus and Book of War is great!

@Westmeres Yeah I'm always a big fan of burst damage so I couldn't resist! I think the fact this deck has a solid chance of killing Umôrdhoth in a single turn on standard is pretty great. Re. Roland's poor sanity, yes it's always a bit of a balancing act but as you say I think the allies plus First Aid ••• help a lot. The inclusion of a single Guts too allows you to hit a sweet spot where coverage for treacheries feels right (not too much, not too little). Probably what I spent the most time on when designing the deck was whether to have two Perception or one Guts one Perception, but I definitely think this is the right call in the end (even if it pained me a little to depart from a nice round 25 icons in the deck with a second Perception)!

@HungryColquhoun Finished the core scenarios and is about to move on to DWL with the same deck and with 2 mental trauma from the end of the campaign. Thinking about replacing Perception with Elder Sign Amulet, let's see how it goes!

Oct 08, 2025 HungryColquhoun · 13288

@Westmeres God speed and glad it's seeing use! 2 mental trauma is fairly usual for a campaign (NotZ gives 2 mental trauma for all resolutions that aren't death), so I'd say if you're trying multiple campaigns in a single run Elder Sign Amulet would be advisable! I've never actually tried going from one campaign to another with the same deck, I always start with a new level 0 one (mainly because of the trauma!).

@HungryColquhoun congratulations for this series, it is a very good idea to create decks with this limited card pool! This deck looks both thematic and fun, and I look forward to trying it in true solo. Well done! I would like to ask you your tought about adding Relentless as it would be included in the card pool. With so much damage output, it could reward a lot of cash, but maybe the timing is off. As the deck needs cash to play the assets and not after the set up. Thanks again and I am curious about the next decks of the series.

@der_zeba Thanks and glad you like the series so far!

Re. Relentless, you've hit the nail on the head - the timing tends to be off and it's not that usable early scenario when you need resources the most. You also need to take Shotgun shots early when using Relentless, and while you'll maybe do this once or twice on tougher enemies, most of the time you'll want to be saving ammo for a boss (particularly as you'll often need to use Extra Ammunition to give your Shotgun ammo, and so the uses do feel a bit more precious).

Looking at other (current) current environment cards, things like Cleaning Kit may make Relentless more worthwhile - but even then it's lot of setup and opportunity cost to get it to work compared to just playing a straight resource event. It is a cool thematic idea though, so you could add it for flavor (practicality be damned)!

I love this series but the new core set basically means nome of this are “always current” anymore :(

Well, once the new core drops I’ll try building some “evergreen” decks.

@K_oroviev Yeah seems that way! I'll probably edit in that they're no longer current at some point. They're a nice time capsule though!
